Fire at Roma settlement near Belville residental complex in Belgrade.
A couple of cardboard/plywood houses burned down, with black, dense smoke rising all around. There was a man crying over his home, with all his belongings burning to ashes, right before his eyes. Friends and neighboors were around, consoling him: “we’ll build you another one, don’t you worry” and “you’re one of us, we’ll build you a new house.”
If you lived near a Roma settlement, you’d know that fire like this one isn’t a rarity. Although they usually just burn fridges, to destroy all except metal which they later sell, sometimes a house gets caught on fire too. And those car tyres that keep the roof in it’s place, they burn pure black smoke.
Back in 2009, I photographed another house caught on fire, in Gazela settlement. Luckily, it was an abondoned one.
